We found this Fox Chapel project particularly interesting because of the cabin’s age. The main structure was constructed in the late 1700s, and we were hired along with Capstone Structural Engineering & Consulting to professionally restore the entire exterior of the cabin while building a new-construction workshop to replace the run-down garage that stood on the property for decades.

Cabin exterior restoration and roof replacement

For the cabin restoration, we started by replacing the worn-out existing roof. We laid high-quality architectural shingles and Cor-A-Vent venting products on top of new insulated roof sheathing panels. These materials allow for a very durable and well-insulated roof assembly, which works not only to keep moisture out and the walls dry but also to enhance the energy efficiency of the home.

We removed the old rusted steel gutters and downspouts and replaced them with beautiful copper new ones, which have a longer lifespan. We painted the “chinking” (the seals between the logs) and stained the logs to rejuvenate the overall appearance and help preserve this historic building.

Replacing the old garage with new construction

For the old dilapidated garage, the owner requested that the new construction have enough space for a workshop and additional storage. So inside the 500 square-foot build, we made sure there was plenty of room for projects and gear with an open design and vaulted ceilings. And when not being used as a studio, this custom garage can comfortably accommodate two large vehicles.

We also wanted the new custom-built structure to match the cabin’s rustic eighteenth-century style and to blend in with the surrounding area as much as possible. We accomplished this by lining the building with cedar board and batten siding, which has a history dating back to the log-cabin age. In addition, we installed the same beautiful copper gutters and downspouts, black aluminum-clad sliding windows, a durable roof, and a hay door. The black gooseneck light fixture above the roll-up door is a nice final touch on a classic structure.

With the brand new roof and exterior updates, as well as a brand new workshop, our experienced team was able to breathe new life into this historic property. We are proud to have contributed to the preservation of this landmark structure.
