This modern Fox Chapel space was inspired by the client’s need for a private work-from-home solution that could also function as an artist’s studio, home gym, and lounge area. We joined up with Sylvan Architecture to construct the Hidden Hut – a 500 square-foot multipurpose structure secluded from the main house.
A NEW CONSTRUCTION
MULTIUSE SPACE
With its open layout and roll-up door, this space was designed with versatility in mind. The custom geometric windows create an alluring architectural aspect, and the two-tiered standing seam roof lends style and energy efficiency to the structure. Black stainless steel gutters line the roof, and durable Hardie Plank lap siding blends in with the painted brick on the existing home. Finishing things off, two striking red barn lamps flank each entrance, adding a flash of color to the exterior.
ELEVATING A MODERN
INTERIOR DESIGN
Even though this custom build may look like a garage from the outside, it’s anything but on the inside. The finished plywood over the walls and ceiling radiates warmth, and the unexpected slat walls – our favorite feature – provide a dynamic contrast to the smooth textures. Concrete floors provide a surface durable enough for any activity, and the exposed beam above helps enhance the depth of the room. A sleek ceiling fan and recessed lighting contribute to the subtle yet sophisticated contemporary look.
CREATING A TRUE INDOOR/OUTDOOR AREA
In addition to the Clopay roll-up door, we included several Marvin black-trim casement windows as well as a sliding glass door system that opens to seamlessly connect the indoor space and the backyard. With a new paver patio and cozy fire pit outside, this flexible layout is great for entertaining guests. The Hidden Hut’s atmosphere is so inviting that the homeowner’s chickens are known to make their way inside.
