Along with architect Gwen Dakis of dragonARCH consulting, we transformed this historic Squirrel Hill home with an 800 square-foot kitchen renovation and custom addition.
CREATING A DINING ROOM
WITH A BUMP-OUT ADDITION
The original kitchen was very cramped, so the homeowners hired us to open the space up and renovate the kitchen. We started by remodeling the interior and bumping out the wall to create room for a proper dining nook. We filled the walls with windows to allow plenty of natural light in and give it more of an airy feel. To complete the new square footage, the client purchased a repurposed church pew and modified it to fit the corner, making for a unique seating area.
ENHANCING THE KITCHEN WITH A FULL RENOVATION
After we expanded the size of the kitchen area, it was time to renovate. Because the client is an avid cook, we wanted to maximize the kitchen’s functionality and storage capacity while featuring the client’s passion for the culinary arts. The oversized island takes center stage, with its large quartzite countertop, Thompson Traders hammered stainless steel farmhouse sink, and an open-shelving design that shows off a variety of home-canned items.
Crafted by Architectural Grille, the one-of-a-kind pot and pan racks on each side of the range are an attractive way to store and display the client’s antique and well-loved cookware. The subway tile backsplash and stainless steel hood complement the contemporary design.
Select cabinetry features LED lighting and glass inserts, which provide an elegant way to showcase dishware and decorative items. The Sub Zero refrigerator and pendant lights above the island add even more modern sophistication to the space.
INCREASING
OUTDOOR APPEAL
Off the kitchen, we also renovated the mudroom that leads out to the backyard. There, we built a custom deck for a more hospitable outdoor space. We installed a new back door and fully rejuvenated the overhang, creating an inviting area that cements the tone of the rest of the home.
